If you’re a freshwater fly fisherman, there’s a good chance you’ll find yourself, from time to time, fishing stillwater. The flies presented this month are made for lake fishing, and come to us from across the pond.

Known as “midges” to you and me, or Chironomids if you’re an aspiring entomologist, buzzers are a year-round staple to lake dwelling fish--at least 65 different species of midges have been identified in the lakes of New England. It’s a simple pattern to tie, and so it’s perfect for knocking the rust off as we head into the new tying season. Fish this fly in tandem with the dry of your choice on a dead drift or with a painfully slow retrieve. A long leader is also de rigueur.
