Recipe for Rob Lurie's BUFF (Big Ugly Freakin Fly)
Hook:   2-12 any length
Thread: Color of marabou feather
Tail:  3/8 inch clump of marabou
Flash: Peacock Krystal Flash
Body: 1/2 inch clumps of marabou
Wing:  1/2 inch clump of marabou from stiff-stemmed feather.
Collar:  Optional:  Soft hackle of partridge or colored feather.
Eyes:  Bead chain, barbell, or none.
Head cement:  Clear sparkle nail polish.Wind thread evenly to bend.

  • Wind thread evenly to bend.
Tie on marabou from stem of stiff feather. Tie in at bend, leaving about 1/4 inch butt and holding up the tail.  Tail should be about hook length.
  • Tie in 2 pieces of peacock Krystal Flash on top of tail, leaving half the length forward.  Fold over forward pieces and tie down on top of first flash.  Cut flash unevenly a little shorter than the tail.  The flash keeps the tail from winding around the bend of the hook.
  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 with slightly shorter clump of marabou, tying new clump ahead of old butt and holding up the wing while tying.  The butts will form the body.
  • Repeat until 3/16th inch from hook eye.  Reverse tie the final clump and fold back.
  • Tie on eyes (optional)
  • Wind collar (optional)
